Freedom is a relative concept. Anyone with access to a newspaper these days
knows that the total population behind bars in the US is currently
approaching 2 million; that prisons are increasingly run by for-profit
companies whose motivation is the bottom line rather than the rehabilitation
of prisoners; that the majority of inmates are members of ethnic
minorities who are behind bars for non-violent offenses; that executions
have reached an all-time high and that the US Supreme Court is currently
questioning the constitutionality of executing mentally retarded prisoners.
On the outside, personal freedoms are also increasingly threatened. Much of
our so-called ³public space² is now under permanent surveillance through
the use of sophisticated technologies which are not readily available to
ordinary citizens.
The question is, what are visual artists, writers, activists, film-makers,
photographers, culture jammers, media artists, hackers and performance
artists doing to respond to this situation? How is this being documented,
analyzed and counteracted? We are particularly interested in current &
innovative work, especially involving inmates.
Sandbox Open Arts is a not-for-profit arts organization which is entirely
volunteer-run. Please note that Magazine participants receive 2 copies and
event participants receive 2 copies. Other than this Sandbox is not in a
position to pay contributors for either publication or performance.
However, we are strongly committed to producing and promoting contributors¹
work in a professional manner within the limitations of our budget.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Include article outline and any supporting materials including articles,
reviews, recordings etc. as well as SASE.

Webzine are projects of Sandbox Open Arts, a not-for-profit arts
organization whose mission is to encourage experimentation in the visual
arts, the performing arts, music, and literature with a particular emphasis
on interactive and multi-media work. We are also particularly committed to
exploring the connections between art, culture and society. Sandbox,
Magazine of Creative & Subversive Play is published semi-annually. Each
issue is theme-based and is released in conjunction with a performance and
installation event.

MONTREAL, MAY 2nd, 2001 - Following the huge success of its inaugural
presentation, MUTEK returns bigger and better for a second edition from May
30 to June 3: five days of concerts and performances illustrating the
world-wide vitality of sound and music creation using digital technologies.
Presented by EX-CENTRIS, MUTEK 2001 features a selection of the most
original and innovative artists in the field of advanced electronic music.
Well connected to ever-changing influences and trends that transcend
societies, MUTEK broadens its horizons this year to recognize the global
character of a major cultural phenomenon by welcoming 40 artists from nine
countries. From Chile to Sweden, through the Netherlands, France, Argentina
and Canada, the fine leaders of the international avant-garde will reunite
in Montreal.
This year, MUTEK inducts a new site: the non-conventional space of Society
for Arts and Technology (SAT) (305 St-Catherine St. W.) where the evenings
of June 1, 2 and 3 (starting at 9 pm) will be presented, as well as the
entire series of free "Happy Hours". The two opening nights (May 30 and 31,
also starting at 9 pm) will take place at Ex-Centris (3536 St-Laurent Blvd).
AN INVITATION TO A JOURNEY
For five intense evenings, MUTEK offers an experience of a film in itself,
with an experimental beginning and an explosive conclusion finale. Between
these two poles, an evolutionary journey of seeing and hearing a number of
declinations of current digital creation. The audience is thus invited on a
formidable journey across the spectrum of new sounds, filled with brand new
discoveries and experiences.
The festivities will culminate Sunday, June 3 at the SAT with an
extraordinary evening, bringing together three of the biggest names in
electronic music, DIMBIMAN (from Perlon), THOMAS BRINKMANN and MATTHEW
HERBERT!
This brilliant destination has as its point of departure, on Wednesday, May
30 at Ex-Centris, a dive into the Electro-acoustic foundations of electronic
music with GOEM, a Holland trio better known as Kapotte Muziek, and MIKAEL
STAVOSTRAND, a pivotal figure in the Scandinavian electronic music scene. A
meeting between Montreal's analogue sound-effects engineer, MARTIN
TETREAULT, and the experimental creations of I8U will start things off,
before JETONE (Tim Hecker) concludes this inaugural evening.
Thursday, May 31, the Fellini theatre at Ex-Centris will be transformed into
a veritable operating room, as MATMOS interpret their recent compositions
constructed by sampling surgical instruments and backed by visuals of a
similar theme. Musical collaborators to Bjork and newest indie sensation,
Matmos illustrate that experimental music is far from boring by marrying,
with humor and wit, rock and techno. The unit AELAB will precede the duo,
who will then be followed by a sound and visual collage, influenced by funk
and minimal techno, from RECHENZENTRUM. The evening will conclude at 11pm at
the SAT, with South American RIC Y MARTIN made up of Ricardo Villalobos and
Dandy Jack, who record Electro-jazz and Latin rhythms on the Perlon label.
The next day, Friday, June 1 at the SAT, TRIPLE R will present a selection
of artists, from many different continents and regrouped under the TRAUM
label. This is a new generation of artists that enriches, with its variety
of influences, the domain of electronic music: PROCESS (UK), PHILIPPE CAM
(France), GUSTAVO LAMAS (Argentina) and Montreal's own AKUFEN; a rising
figure who knows a dazzling unfurling abroad since his performance last year
at MUTEK.
The evening of Saturday June 2 will be dedicated to Cologne's prestigious
label, KOMPAKT, who will use MUTEK as its premiere performance in North
America. United under the KOMPAKT label, a guarantee of quality synonymous
with sound research and elaborate, accessible and transporting rhythms,
DETTINGER, CLOSER MUSIK, JONAS BERING and TOBIAS THOMAS will deliver what
promises to be a truly special event, a great celebration of electronic
music.
ENCOUNTERS AND DISCOVERIES
With the goal of making sound performance accessible to a greater audience,
and as a compliment to the principal program, MUTEK has organized a series
of free concerts presented every day at the SAT. These "Happy Hours" (5 pm
to 7 pm) are an occasion to experience the sounds of MUTEK in a location
conducive to meetings among the public, artists and the industry.
Chileans DANDY JACK and RICARDO VILLALOBOS will get the ball rolling on
Wednesday, May 30, while on Thursday, May 31, four young Montreal composers:
JULIEN ROY, MAXIME MORIN (Rodeo in Reno) as well as COLLIS BROWN and J.
TRAVERS (Vrac) will present atypical approaches to musical composition.
On Friday, June 1, KAPOTTE MUZIEK, accompanied by "students" who will have
participate in a workshop that day, invites the audience to a tour of the
daily environment, not with their eyes, but with their ears, by re-mixing of
sounds gleaned live from the performance site.
The underground Montreal label Alien8 will take advantage of the Happy Hour
on Saturday, June 2 to launch its sub-label SUBSTRACTIF, with performances
by the first two artists to be signed: TOMAS JIRKU and MITCHELL AKIYAMA. And
Sunday, June 3 Toronto label DUMB-UNIT, will take the spotlight to showcase
JACOB FAIRLEY, REPAIR and JEREMY P. CAULFIELD.
AN EVENT LIKE NO OTHER IN NORTH AMERICA
MUTEK is the first event in North America to dedicate itself to developments
in electronic music by bringing artistic approach and technological
innovation to the forefront, while providing a favourable context for
listening for both artists and audience. MUTEK bridges the gap between North
America and Europe, whose electronic music scene has seen an impressive
explosion, and puts Montreal in the world's spotlight. Thanks largely to
notoriety gained in a single year, MUTEK has become a catalyst for local
musicians by allowing them to participate in this network of international
exchange.

MONTREAL INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL NEW CINEMA NEW MEDIA (FCMM)

Dynamic and inspired. Challenging and visionary. Provocative and
groundbreaking. All these terms describe the Montreal international
Festival of new Cinema and new Media (FCMM). Recognized for its bold,
eclectic programming, the FCMM is a multidisciplinary happening that fuses
mediums and genres. In keeping with its aim of promoting cinéma d'auteur,
independent video, and creativity in new media, the FCMM is constantly on
the lookout for new and original works. Innovation and exploration are the
guiding principles of the FCMM's programming, which is divided into five
main categories: feature film and video, documentary, short and
medium-length work, performance and digital work.
As a film festival, the FCMM has been at the forefront of the revolution in
motion pictures and sound for thirty years. This year, the New Media
section returns to celebrate its fifth anniversary and to once again tackle
with new forms of artistic expression in the realm of digital culture. The
Festival's Media Lounge as well as the cutting-edge Ex-Centris complex have
already been the hosts of an astounding line-up of new media artists,
hosting many well established acts while remaining a springboard for local
and international emerging artists (see listing at the end of this email).
In order to pursue its commitment towards the development of innovative
ways of displaying and presenting works that integrate the use of new
technologies, the New Media section of the FCMM is calling for proposals in
two new categories: digital creation and performance.
DIGITAL WORK/CREATION
In its effort to join the realm of filmaking and digital culture, this
year's digital work category will feature an international selection of
works created on digital media or using digital image manipulation
techniques. The FCMM is thus seeking creative works that expand the
perspective of filmaking through the use of digital technologies.
Particular consideration will be given to entries demonstrating audacity
and novelty in their ability to create a happening and appeal to festivalgoers.
Best Digital Work -CA$5,000
PERFORMANCE
This category will showcase an international selection of performance
pieces. Entries should be characterized by the creative, innovative and
significant use of moving images, digital image and sound processing, and
new technologies. The FCMM is especially interested in projects
demonstrating innovative approaches to the presentation of interactive
works and time-based artistic interventions. Particular attention will be
paid to projects exploring new forms of narrative.

Wiretap 7.05: Stadtluft macht frei!
In collaboration with MUTE magazine this Wiretap examines the old German
saying 'Die Stadtluft macht frei' or the city air liberates. Dating from
medieval times, the city was seen as the place where notions of freedom,
citizenship and independence could come to fruition. However, is the urban
condition still considered as a means that can stimulate and accelerate
social and cultural change? In short: Macht die Stadtluft noch immer frei?
In the fifties and sixties the Situationists formulated a radical critique
on capitalist power structures and consumer culture, by mapping public space
as a political locus of action and cultural creation. Central to their
theories was the remaking of urban space in which individual experiences
become protagonists, and where cultural intervention is viewed as a
political act.
Taking this historical note into account, how do cultural practitioners
manage the fabric of the city today? Cultural organisations have
increasingly been attributed a cleansing value through processes of
gentrification and regeneration (e.g. the revamping of de Witte de
Withstraat in Rotterdam). Yet, how radical can these organisations claim to
be when their culture becomes a currency in the urban political agenda. Is
there still a culture-critical wind of change in the city?
The participants of Wiretap7.05 surf between these tensions, often in the
wind's eye.

Pauline van Mourik Broekman (NL/GB)
Pauline van Mourik Broekman is, together with Simon Worthington, co-editor
and publisher of Mute magazine, which she co-founded in 1994 soon after
leaving art college and has helped develop into an internationally
recognised voice on technoculture and independent media production. Aside
from editing Mute, she also writes and lectures extensively on culture,
media and publishing in the UK and abroad. Recent essays include 'The
Vanishing' - on artistic responses to nuclear technology (Locus Solus, Black
Dog Publishing) and 'Art, interrupted' - on the work of English artist
Josephine Pryde. Pauline is currently involved in the metamorphosis of
Metamute from a traditional magazine archive site into - something
completely different!
James Stevens (GB)
James Stevens has been one of the driving forces behind BACKSPACE (net
lounge and medialab in London) since it was established in 1995. In 2000 he
established 'spc.org', a small organisation run and arranged by consensus
and loose association to share resources. He is Co-Founder of CONSUME, a
strategy for self provision of networking services, utilising Wireless LAN
technologies, open source development principals and counter commercial
tactics. It is developed and maintained on a not for profit basis by those
using it. James Stevens works currently as the UK Producer for the Windows
Media Player Guide.
Josephine Berry (GB)
Josephine Berry is Deputy Editor of Mute. She is also completing a PhD on
site-specific art on the net at the University of Manchester. During
1997-1998, she co-edited Crash Media, a bi-monthly tabloid on independent
media production, with Micz Flor and organised "Exploding Media", a related
symposium at the University of Salford in 1998. Josephine co-authored the
"Snowfields" Internet site with Micz Flor, for which they won the Stuttgart
multimedia prize of 1998. She writes extensively on art and culture. Recent
work has been included in Inventory and Telepolis.
David Panos (GB)
David previously worked as a research consultant to large commercial
clients. He specialised in deploying ethnographic and documentary techniques
to produce comprehensive studies of phenomena such as festivals and suburban
social networks. David has lectured at Goldsmiths, The University of East
London, The Royal College of Art and the Architecture Association on
contemporary culture and communications and branding. He is also a
contributor to Mute Magazine and is part of the experimental
improvisation/digital noise project Aufgehoben No Process
Benedict Seymour (GB)
Benedict Seymour is a freelance journalist, writer and film maker. He has
written for a range of magazines, journals and newspapers including Mute,
Radical Philosophy, Frieze, Art Monthly, Dazed & Confused and The
Independent. His areas of interest include politics, philosophy, art,
literature, film and technology. At present he is researching a documentary
film about regeneration, gentrification and the impact of globalisation in
London with Year Zero productions.
Year Zero Productions
David Panos set up Year Zero in September 2000 as an independent production
company that aims to foreground experimental and critical/political
approaches to digital documentary making. Their current project is an
examination of the convergent trends of Gentrification, Regeneration and
Social Housing in East London.
Year Zero's current documentary project looks at London's Borough of Hackney
and examines the recent social, economic and architectural transformation of
this part of the inner city. The film looks at Gentrification, Regeneration
and Social Housing in an area infamous for its poverty and social exclusion.
It also seeks to address broader issues about how we think about social
provision, citizenship and the urban condition in the wake of the
Neo-Liberal attack on the Welfare State throughout the 80s and 90s.
The film is constructed from interviews with local politicians, housing and
regeneration organisations, community action groups, local people, estate
agents, writers, artists, and academics exposing the contradictory rhetoric
and new social conflicts of a supposedly 'post-political' era.
Shot entirely on DV in and around Hackney the film is still in production
and will be completed in Autumn 2001.

Subject: Call for your material for Shedhalle archive
As part of the project >never look back<, taking place at Shedhalle, Zurich
from 1 June to 22 July 2001, the Shedhalle archive will be reorganised and
expanded. The existing archive is based on documentation and other material
from previous exhibition projects.
Central interest of the Shedhalle projects, and hence of the archive has for
the last eight years been an interdisciplinary discourse of
socio-politically relevant themes, as well as an expansion of artisic
practis through feminist theory, cultural studies, forms of activism,
collectively and transdisciplinary communities.
The Shedhalle however likes to open the archive for more information,
publications and documentation of projects. Your material should fit into
the subjects that have been relevant for reflection of a critical cultural
practice : Gene- and technology critique, gender politics, critique of
economy, urban development, pop culture, media activism, discussions on
post-colonialism as well as institutional critique.
Our aim is to build and open up the Shedhalle archive on international
critical art and exhibition practice. It is very important for us that this
archive will be expanded with material of projects and artists groups that
are external to the Shedhalle, but are in their interests parallel to those
of the Shedhalle initiatives.
Maybe you have already been affiliated in one way or the other with our
projects and so we might have some material in the archive. However, it
would be great if you would send us more. We will come up with a system of
boxes each containing the material relevant for your group or project.
